What does a great Data Business Analyst do?

The Data Business Analyst role sits in the Business Intelligence team, part of the Product & Technology organization. It is the analysts’ responsibility to work with a wide group of stakeholders to lead and manage development projects to build new B.I. solutions.

The varied role will guide requirements and solution design for data capture and testing, as well as leading the design of business logic and oversee reporting front end development, ensuring new B.I. solutions meet continually evolving commercial needs.

Initially focusing on our expanding Advertising business, you’ll play an important role in shaping the future of our reporting environment, supporting our data modernization activities and working in areas such as Ad serving, Ad network, and programmatic technologies.

Responsibilities include:

• Work with a range of product, technical and commercial teams to identify evolving requirements for new B.I. tools and solutions.
• Translate commercial requirements for technical audiences, owning the design of new solutions to ensure they deliver value aligned to business priorities.
• Lead projects to build new B.I. solutions which drive incremental commercial value from a variety of new and existing data sources.
• On a project-by-project basis, research and analyze the impact of changing technology environments and data flows on B.I. solutions. Manage the process for necessary changes to data processing logic and reporting tools (but not the actual coding).
• Specify high level and detailed data source and processing logic for engineering teams.
• Ensure new work items are brought into the backlog and prioritized appropriately within B.I. team and other data engineering teams.
• Work closely with multiple data engineering and product delivery teams to ensure required activities are identified, prioritized and delivered to agreed scope, quality and timelines.
• Profile, test and validate new and existing data sources and provide signoff.
• Conduct gap analysis between existing and proposed processes or system solutions. Produce system, data mapping and other documentation as required.
• Identify, report and own resolution of operational data problems with engineering teams.
• Lead user engagement through training of new solutions - translate complex data concepts to easily understood and impactful business insights.
• Using advanced analytical skills and knowledge of data sources, analyze and use insights to inform and guide wider Travelport product & solution development decisions.
• Establish relationships and maintain communications with a wide set of stakeholders across product & technology and commercial organizations within Travelport.
• Produce custom analytics to support commercial and product teams on ad-hoc basis and lead in best practice how to use data in broader business.

• Creativity – demonstrate ability to think outside the box, taking a proactive approach, proposing solutions to data limitations or gaps.
• Have a strong desire to learn new tools and technical skills as well as learning about new industries and business areas.

Our ambition is to hire for potential not just experience, and you’re likely to succeed if you:

• Ability to lead and manage projects independently, as well as contribute as a subject matter expert within projects at a detailed level.
• Experience working with inter-connected data environments; for example, some exposure to data sourcing, data warehousing techniques or ETL tools.
• Experience performing data discovery and analysis of large and unfamiliar data sets.
• Understand how commercial value can be driven from data.
• Experience working with technical and non-technical stakeholders to gather, understand and prioritize requirements – bridging the gap between commercial and technical teams.
• Experience communicating at all levels, comfortable relaying concepts and adapting presentation style across technical and commercial teams.
• Writing and running basic SQL queries, or experience working with AWS is desirable.
• Experience working closely with development or engineering teams, or in a software development environment is desirable.
• Understanding of Advertising technology (Ad serving technologies, Ad exchanges, demand-side platforms, and supply-side platforms) is desirable.
