Summary

We've got an exciting opportunity to join our team at Knole House, as a Collections Assistant.

We protect everything from bats to buildings to beaches – and we want to share them with everyone too. But how do we care for our special places, while helping everyone to enjoy them and their fascinating stories? It’s no small task. In fact, it’s a big team effort and it’s why our Collections Assistants are so important.

You'll be working roughly 4 days per week and working to an agreed staff rota throughout the year, including some weekends and bank holidays.

Interviews will be held on Friday 5 July at Knole.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Senior Collections and House Officer, you'll be working with the Collections and House Officer, alongside 3 other Collections Assistants.

We're a busy team, who like a challenge and work at a fast pace. We work collaboratively with each other and the wider property and we're hands on and work together to get the job done.

What you'll be doing

As a Collections Assistant, you’ll be working with a great conservation team in an incredible place. This is a practical, hands-on role, where you’ll help with the day-to-day presentation of Knole’s showrooms, ensuring they look their best. You’ll also follow the latest preventive conservation guidance and monitor everything from the environmental conditions of the showrooms to the collection objects themselves, assessing for signs of change, maintaining records, and undertaking minor treatments when necessary.

You'll be involved in handling and moving the collection across site and will help develop our knowledge of the collection. The role often involves working in front of our visitors and we’d love for you to talk about the work you’re doing, the practices and techniques we use, and the history of Knole and its outstanding collection. Working at a popular historic property you'll also be required to help across site as needed

We all have a place we love. A place that inspires us. A place with its own unique and particular atmosphere. We were created to help people make the most of these very special places - and the good things that come from them.

We're independent of Government and receive no direct grant or subsidy for our core work. Instead, our future depends on the active support and generosity of 5.8 million members, 20 million visitors, 60,000 volunteers and over 11000 people who work with us (as well as thousands who help us seasonally), as well as benefactors, tenants and other partners.

Today, we're Europe's largest conservation organisation, with huge - and incredibly varied - responsibilities. We protect and welcome everyone to explore and enjoy some 709 miles of coastline, 250,000 hectares of land of outstanding natural beauty, 104 nature reserves, 6 World Heritage Sites. We also look after spectacular houses and gardens and one of the world’s largest and most significant holdings of fine art and heritage objects.

We want every one of our visitors to enjoy these amazing places and have an experience they'll never forget. We want them to try something they've never tried before, to gain a unique glimpse into the past and, ultimately, to love these special places as much as we do.
