Sustainability Advisor

At a glance

The Sustainability and Transition Finance team is looking for a flexible and hands on team member who can assist in implementing the bank’s sustainability strategy within the UK. Activities range from having strategic dialogues with our clients on sustainability, identifying and executing financing transactions that support our clients in their transition to more sustainable business models and supporting coverage bankers in sustainability risk due diligence process. You will be a member of a small and dynamic team of sustainability experts in the UK and you will work closely with colleagues both in the UK and in the Netherlands, including ABN AMRO’s Sustainability Expertise Team, Client Coverage, Financing Solutions, Risk and the Sustainability Centre of Excellence.

You will be part of the UK Sustainability and Transition Finance team and will assist with furthering ABN AMRO’s reputation as an expert in the field of sustainability in the UK market. The position has a hierarchical reporting line to the UK Sustainability Regulation Advisor. 

ABN AMRO is active in the UK through three UK branches of three Dutch entities: ABN AMRO Bank NV, (AAB), ABN AMRO Asset Based Finance (ABF) and ABN AMRO Clearing Bank NV (AACB). Our business strategy is focused on deep client relationships, leveraging local product sales capability and Head Office based execution power. 

The UK Sustainability and Transition Finance team has been created to meet the demands of ABN AMRO’s growing sustainable finance portfolio in the UK. The team sits between two departments: UK Legal and UK Corporate and Institutional Clients, to provide both regulatory and commercial advice in the field of sustainability. 

Your job

You’ll support the UK Sustainability Regulation Advisor in the dual function of (i) advising the UK business and (ii) supporting UK clients, on all aspects of sustainability. 

You will be working with multiple stakeholders both internally and externally. Your role will include: 

  • Acting as the sustainability expert within a deal team in the context of sustainability linked transactions, including identifying relevant sustainability-linked KPIs and supporting clients with their sustainability strategy where needed
  • Acting as a subject matter expert on ESG matters within ABN AMRO UK and supporting the UK Sustainability Regulation Advisor in identifying knowledge development needs within the business
  • Supporting the UK Sustainability Regulation Advisor in the execution of the UK sustainability strategy 
  • Working with client and product teams to develop financial products and services in the field of sustainability 
  • Monitoring and recording best practices globally in the field of sustainability 
  • Developing thought leadership materials 
  • Coordinating all initiatives with Head Office in Amsterdam to leverage existing knowledge and to act as a conduit for sharing sustainability related information, direction and initiatives locally.

  • Corporate and Institutional Banking which includes Corporate Banking, Clearing, Global Markets - Sales & Trading and Financial Institutions 
  • Commercial Banking which includes Asset Based Finance and International Desk, which provides transactional banking services

Our business lines are supported by a number of functions such as Risk, Compliance, Legal, IT, Finance (Including Tax), Business Management and Human Resources. We currently employ approx. 380 people in the UK.

Your profile

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in sustainability, finance, accounting or law 

Required skills: 

  • A passion for sustainability themes
  • Experience of sustainability-linked and green loan frameworks  
  • Good understanding of the ESG regulatory ecosystem  
  • A demonstrable ability to advise on complex and nuanced matters 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • An ability to work with and to manage the expectation of multiple stakeholders, including clients 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English 
  • An ability to work well as part of a team 

Preferred skills: 

  • A working knowledge of Dutch would be an advantage 
  • Credentials (e.g. diploma or other qualification) in sustainable finance and/or sustainability regulations
