Job Introduction Come and help us realise our mission to ensure the BBC is a data led organisation. We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our Audience Portal team that allows our content creators, commissioners and senior leaders understand how well our content is performing with our audiences. This team helps empower people across the BBC to make data powered decisions in their roles by creating products that meet them where they are, and provide them the data they need in a seamless user experience. Our cross discipline team consists of Engineers, User Experience folks, Delivery managers and a Product owner working in concert. We are a full stack engineering team working on a modern tech stack, looking for an experienced full stack engineer to join us. As engineers we help realise the ambitions of our mission, while also caring deeply about how we deliver high quality, reliable software that is well supported, developed and maintained. We are passionate about engineering best practices, and making sure we dedicate ourselves to the craft of good software engineering. We work within a department whose focus it is to empower the whole BBC with data and also within a wider engineering community here at the BBC. So we are looking for someone who wants to come and collaborate, contribute, learn, grow and help us be an even better team. Main Responsibilities Your role in our team will be to help us to develop our insights products. You will be developing features by writing high quality code alongside your peers. You will be attending stand-ups, retrospectives, and technical shaping meetings. You will be delivering value to our products by deploying changes to our live products across our front and back-end stacks. You will be responsible for ensuring our products are well supported in live, by making sure we have great monitoring, alerting and testing. You will also be responding to and helping to solve issues that occur in live, using your knowledge to fix them and then help us learn from those issues. You will be expected to contribute to the culture of your team. Shaping the engineering practices you use, and helping us find new and better ways to work more efficiently. You will be using your technical knowledge to help us manage our technical debt work and ensure we are able to properly keep our codebases healthy. You will also be supporting other engineers in the team to learn and grow their skills. You will own the quality of the code you write, and will be expected to ensure we have the right level and types of testing for the code you write. You will also be helping to review and approve the code of your peers, looking out for best practices and potential things to improve. You will be doing all of this as a proactive and collaborative member of our team. Working in tandem with your fellow engineers and other discipline peers. You will be expected to help foster an inclusive environment by promoting and adhering to our expectations on how we treat and support one another. You will also be sending your time growing yourself. Attending conferences, workshops, away days and utilising things like 10% time and Community time. Your line manager will be working with you to help you progress in your career and make sure you can do your best work. Are you the right candidate?

  • Experience working with: Javascript, Typescript, React.js, Next.js, Node, CSS, Sass, HTML, Cypress, Jest, Storybook, node.
  • Experience of working with: AWS (Elastic, Lambda, SNS, SQS, S3, Redshift).
  • Good communication skills.
  • Experience of pairing and working closely with other developers.
  • Experience of working with other disciplines in a product team model.
  • Experience of working in an Agile team (scrum)
  • Experience of managing and maintaining systems in a live environment.
  • Willingness to help foster a collaborative, inclusive culture.
  • Used to working in an environment using source control solutions (Git, etc.) including branching & working with repositories
  • Knowledge of the software development and software testing lifecycles
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment (Scrum)
