Design with people in mind.

What does an interaction designer do in DWP?

We use our experience and skills as designers to create user-centred solutions, for both digital and non-digital interactions.

We use research and analytics to understand user needs, identify opportunities and inform designs, basing solutions on evidence, feedback and data.

Our work enables more people to connect with and access DWP services more easily, with better outcomes.

We're champions of accessibility and inclusion, considering the impact of new technologies and how these technologies may change user needs.

We create prototypes using appropriate tools and methodologies, advising others on prototyping best practice.

We lead and coordinate design work, supporting other designers and working across teams so ensure collaboration and synchronisation.

We're part of a brilliant Design community in DWP and across government. We share insights, best practice and news, and support each other.

We keep our skills sharp and grow our careers with access to unlimited learning in whatever form works best for us - book budgets, mentoring, formal learning, events and lots more.

Your essential skills and experience:

  • User focus : Experience with drawing insights from research and analytics to better inform decisions on how to meet user needs and test designs against these findings.
  • Accessibility : Experience designing with accessibility in mind, showing familiarity with the WCAG 2.2 guidelines and designing to meet AA standards.
  • Evidence and context-based design : You work closely with your team and wider design community to identify gaps in knowledge, checking that designs are backed by evidence and work contextually.
  • Prototyping : A working knowledge of industry standard prototyping tools and techniques.
  • Communication : You can explain complex needs and solutions clearly and concisely, conveying in-depth technical requirements perfectly to team members and stakeholders.

You'll be based in one of our brilliant digital hub in Manchester, Blackpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle or Birmingham.

We also have all the tools and tech to work flexibly. We operate a hybrid working model with some time in the office and the rest at home.
