Description

Harmeny Education Trust is a charitable organisation providing therapeutic care and education to children who have experienced early years trauma through abuse, neglect and family disruption, referred from all over Scotland. We currently work with children and young people aged 5-18, both on a day and all-year-round residential basis.

 

Our core service, Harmeny School, comprises:  

· An education service, which includes an outdoor learning team.

· A care service, with five residential cottages and one day service cottage.

· Support services, made up of a therapies manager coordinating evidence-informed approaches for children and young people, finance, estates, catering and domestic services, fundraising, IT, HR, learning and development, and admin teams.

We have recently developed a practice framework, The Harmeny Way, which describes the unique combination of therapeutic approaches used to guide our work and ensure consistent practice with children and young people placed with us. 

 

We are currently seeking a Nights Manager to join our Care Nights Team on a permanent, part-time (0.71 FTE) basis . They will be a member of the care management team, which operates all year round. 

 

The post holder will contribute to the creation of a culture and ethos in which the needs of the children are paramount and provide them with security, safety, care and social development to enable them to reach their potential. The post holder will meet these needs during the night on a bespoke rota pattern that meets the needs of the service. 

 

Responsibilities include quality assurance, annual leave management, rota planning, learning and development, HR aspects and support for night staff.

 

The post-holder will work approximately 120 hours per month and a bespoke rota will be agreed with Service Manager in advance. In each month the successful candidate is likely to work the following shifts:

  • 10 x 10-hour night shifts
  • 2 x 7-hour shifts (day, evening or night)
  • 1 x 6-hour shift (day, evening or night) 

The salary for the post is £27,376 per annum, with an allowance for working nights of £4,380 (calculated using a part-time salary (0.71 FTE) based on a full-time equivalent salary of £38,558).

 

The post-holder must have a minimum of HNC and SVQ (SCQF level 9) qualifications in line with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) registration requirements for residential child care workers with supervisory responsibilities. A driving licence allowing the use of our vehicles is also essential.

 

The successful applicant will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme and register with the SSSC.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Promote a positive ethos in the school consistent with Harmeny’s vision, purpose and core values.
  2. Implement CMT decisions, consistent with Harmeny strategic and operational plans, and regularly report progress to the Service Manager. 
  3. Adhere to the requirements of the SSSC Code of Practice, and ensure that team members maintain the highest possible standards of professional practice.
  4. Have lead responsibility for the night time running and ongoing development of the organisation, alongside CMT, including arranging and facilitation monthly supervision.
  5. Be responsible for the care and welfare of CYP and staff, reporting any safeguarding or health and safety issues immediately, in line with relevant policies and procedures.
  6. Support the development of plans, policies that meet the individual care, and therapeutic needs of CYP.
  7. Attend to all needs of CYP which occur through the night, alongside RCCW (Nights) worker, the sleeping member of staff or duty manager as required.
  8. Assist with staff recruitment and deployment of night staff, ensuring that effective cover arrangements are in place when necessary.
  9. Arrange regular team meetings with staff and provide effective systems of communication, ensuring that decisions from SMT/CMT and other developments are communicated to your team.
  10. Contribute to the delivery of learning and development, as appropriate.
  11. Undertake post-registration continuous professional learning (CPL) in line with SSSC registration requirements.
  12. Lead on and contribute to projects, with a view to promoting continuous improvement.
  13. Communicate and interact positively with children using solution focussed & strengths-based principles in line with Harmeny policy, procedures and core values.
  14. Promote develop and implement elements of care plans which address the needs of the child. 
  15. If required, in relation to night time wakefulness, be involved in the development and implementation of risk assessment planning for children.
  16. Be able to understand children’s behaviour and support them to manage their behaviour themselves. 
  17. Where required, as a last resort, implement physical intervention techniques.
  18. Ensure that all children’s personal records including database, reviews and medical information are kept up to date.           
  19. Attend supervision, training and other meetings as required.
  20. Provide direct support and guidance to the SRCCW (Nights), also those who are cottage based on all childcare and health & safety matters that occur through the night.
  21. Provide regular supervision and debrief to SRCCW Night team, within the therapeutic framework of Harmeny policy.
  22. Organise the SRCCW Nights rota and to ensure that all roles are covered as necessary, covering some of these within your own working hours. If extra staffing is required, to seek authority from the assigned Service Manager to cover this need.
  23. Cover the annual/sick leave of the SRCCW (Nights), (Partly on a planned basis within pre-planned 10 X 10-hour shifts, also opportunities outwith the outlined shifts, but with additional remuneration). All rota’d working shifts will be agreed in advance with Service Manager. 
  24. Undertake any other duties as delegated by the management team that are consistent with the role of Nights Manager. 

Development and TrainingThe Nights Manager will be required to undertake all relevant training as required to fulfil the duties of the post and maintain SSSC registration (RCCW with supervisory responsibilities).

 

In particular, but not exclusively, Nights Manager will require to undertake the following training:

  • Child protection.
  • First Aid
  • Elementary food hygiene.
  • COSHH.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  1. A minimum of HNC and SVQ (SCQF level 9) qualifications in line with the SSSC registration requirements for RCCW’s with supervisory responsibilities.
  2. Full, clean driving licence.
  3. Management or supervisory experience within a residential childcare setting, including recruiting, inducting, managing and developing staff, and handling a range of HR-related issues. 
  4. Experience of promoting high standards of care and education practice.
  5. A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of CYP who are Looked After and Accommodated and have social, emotional and behavioural needs. 
  6. Experience of handling competing priorities and a challenging workload within a highly pressurised working environment.
  7. Knowledge of child development, childcare legislation and relevant policies and procedures.
  8. Experience of working within a multidisciplinary setting.
  9. An understanding of and commitment to children’s rights and the participation of CYP.
  10. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  11. Good organisational and administrative skills and computer literacy.
  12. Experience of managing and developing others.
  13. Knowledge of managing and creating staff rotas.
  14. Experience of facilitating supervision, coaching and mentoring.
  15. Understanding of the duty of care to children and colleagues. 
  16. Understanding of the practice issues of physical intervention (PI), and ability to undertake PI when required, providing debriefs and reflection to others.

Desirable

  1. A relevant management qualification.
  2. An in-depth understanding of resilience theory and trauma-informed care.
  3. Experience of delivering training.
  4. Experience of working night shifts.
