About UPPINGHAM SCHOOL

Uppingham School, founded in 1584, is one of Britain’s leading co-educational independent boarding schools.

Today, the value of an all-round education, in which each individual and their talents come first, is fundamental to the Uppingham experience. We are a full boarding school and believe the complete immersion in education gives our pupils the richest and most profound experience of school.

At Uppingham we draw on our vibrant heritage to provide a stimulating, dynamic and modern education for our pupils who total almost 800 and are accommodated in 15 boarding houses and cared for by dedicated house parents and

The pupil are taught by two dozen academic departments, and the academic education delivered is thought-provoking, intense, and challenging. Pupils are encouraged to not only participate in a host of extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, drama, and expeditions but to actively pursue interests above and beyond the curriculum.

On the practical side the School operates seven days a week during term time (approx. 32 weeks) and in the summer months operates a commercial summer school. It has approximately 600 full-time and part-time employees, among whom the teachers report to the Headmaster and the support staff to the Bursar.

The School is a registered charity and governed by 24 voluntary Trustees, who are responsible for guiding the Headmaster and Bursar in matters of governance and strategy, and ultimately for the health and safety of pupils, employees, and visitors. Upon leaving the care of the School the pupils are inducted into the Old Uppinghamian (OU) network where they have access to the worldly knowledge and expertise of the 9,000 strong alumni. Understanding the globalisation of the world and the expanding horizons provided by international travel and relocation is essential to the network of pupils each year as they leave Uppingham.
