Our Employment team has enjoyed significant growth in recent years winning notable clients along the way. We have an 18+ strong team operating across our office network which supports a diverse client base, including major retailers, charities, private and public sector organisations and employers, acting for regional and national players. The Team has come to be recognised as one of the leading employment practices in the region, providing our clients with a full service offering.

We have an opportunity for an experienced lawyer to join the team as an Associate or Senior Associate; in an environment that does not have glass ceilings and will allow you to genuinely fast track your career within a firm where progression is entirely merit based. As this role would be offering direct support to two lawyers based in Cornwall, we would express particular interest in candidates based in (or willing to travel) to Devon or Cornwall for face to face meetings. We do operate national service lines, where work is allocated entirely on who is best person to support the client, not the closest geographically, so the work available will not be based on region. All of our team members have lots of direct client contact and involvement in business development and training for clients. As a result, our lawyers feel passionate about what they do, working collaboratively with clients and other advisors such as HR consultants and barristers to achieve the best results. We offer exposure to high quality work, including employment litigation (and associated negotiation), employee relations support, organisational change projects, and TUPE as well as ongoing training, mentoring and supervision by talented leaders in their field.

What you'll do

You will undertake a mixture of contentious and non-contentious work with a significant focus on tribunal claims and day to day employee relations advice to clients predominantly in the retail & consumer and charity sectors. Working as one team across our geographic spread, the commerciality of our approach, our industry and sector knowledge and excellent communication will enable you to deliver great business outcomes for your clients.

You will be tasked with leading business development initiatives strengthening existing relationships by identifying cross-selling opportunities and converting new clients within our target sectors.

What we need

This will be a challenging and demanding role, working to tight deadlines and supporting highly valued clients. In order to be a success you will demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in employment law gained within a leading commercial law firm. You will have a proven track record of supporting employment tribunal litigation and general employee relations advice.
  • In line with our sector approach, ideally you will be able to strengthen our approach to our sectors, in particular retail & consumer and charity sectors.
  • Client centric. We measure our success on the successes of our clients and you will be expected to do the same. You will listen to our clients and deliver a solutions led approach, being agile and flexible to the challenge ahead of you.
  • Our offer to you

In return for your efforts, you can expect considerable scope for personal, as well as professional, development. We encourage people to engage with our popular and well supported coaching and mentoring programmes, which connect you to people right across the firm and at every level. We create space for mental and physical wellbeing with our weekly Lifestyle Hour, along with 28 days’ annual leave (if working full time, otherwise pro-rated) (plus an additional day in your birthday month), private medical insurance (eligibility applies) and a sabbatical you can take every 5 years. You can also buy holiday, managing your benefits flexibly using our sophisticated portal to configure your total reward offer according to what you value most. As part of this, you can make ongoing or one-off donations to our charitable foundation and access our CSR programme where you can engage with community-based initiatives (as a team, or individually) twice a year, to give something back where you feel it matters.
