FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking an experienced Cloud Operations Engineer in London to work for our client within the Finance sector.

This is a hands-on technical operations role focusing on operational management and continuous improvement.

An ideal opportunity for a great communicator who thrives on working collaboratively in a team and is passionate about cloud operations.

You will have 5+ years’ experience in a Technical Operations role with prior technical experience working with Azure Cloud and SQL technologies.

Role Responsibilities

Cloud Operations (Database and Storage)

  • Provide 24x7 operational support for cloud services (focusing on database and storage services), including incident resolution and problem management (after hours support via rostered on-call)
  • Assist with platform support including management and administration of database and storage systems
  • Support operational management of database and storage platforms, including monitoring and alerting, and lifecycle management
  • Achieve performance and availability of the platforms as per the SLAs
  • Ensure systems are maintained and secure, including performing regular patching and upgrades of all relevant components
  • Ensure systems are managed and monitored for capacity and performance, and remain fit for purpose at all times
  • Assist with resiliency activities, including performing regular backup and restore testing, and regular infrastructure and application-level disaster recovery testing
  • Assist with cost optimisation for cloud services, by proactively identifying opportunities for cost savings
  • Assist with managing and maintaining documentation for all platforms, including as-builts
  • Assist with maintaining and supporting all toolsets that provide services for the team
  • Assist with identifying and developing innovative solutions to improve the technology experience, including driving opportunities for automation to uplift operational stability and embed greater efficiency of resources
  • Assist stakeholders to maintain and improve efficient data performance across database and analytics platforms
  • Assist with using Azure policies to ensure compliance, security, and governance across the Azure environment
  • Uphold the application of security engineering principles across cloud environments including SaaS, PaaS, IaaS

Incident and Service Request Management

  • Act as an escalation point for level 1 teams and peers where they are unable to resolve an issue, including support outside of normal business hours for major incidents
  • Ensure all incidents and service requests are handled effectively across each channel, within agreed SLAs, to deliver colleague satisfaction
  • Detect and log possible problems, driving proactive resolution of issues
  • Monitor the status and progress toward resolution of assigned incidents and service requests, liaising between customers, other areas of technology services and external vendors
  • Create and/or update documented procedures to reflect the most effective way to fulfil service requests
  • Identify opportunities to train level 1 teams or other peer engineers to take on BAU work
  • Understand and articulate the business implications of service interruptions and non-standard requests

Vendor Governance

  • Where relevant, ensure vendors align to operational processes, policies, standards, and regulatory requirement

Stakeholder Management

  • Nurture and maintain internal relationships
  • Proactively keep stakeholders up to date on key issues or escalation
  • Governance and Compliance
  • Operate and make decisions according to Policies, Standards and Procedures
  • Ensure appropriate and relevant governance structures, policies and processes are followed, and advocate for continuous improvement to these

Key qualifications

Essential:

  • 5+ years’ experience in technical operations positions, with prior technical experience working with Azure cloud and SQL technologies, ideally in a complex technical environment
  • 2+ years’ experience in Terraform and code driven pipelines using Azure DevOps
  • Previous experience as a Database Administrator with experience managing database availability and performance, configuration, optimisation, backup, patching, and housekeeping such as tuning and indexing.
  • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of ITIL and other relevant ITSM frameworks
  • Critical thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to identify issues and areas for improvement through analysis
  • Experience in process improvement through automation (Terraform, PowerShell or/ and Power Automate)
  • Ability to develop and maintain high quality interpersonal relationships with stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience with and demonstrable technical knowledge of:

- Azure SQL Managed Instances

- SQL Server on Azure VM

- SQL Server reporting Services

- SQL Server Integration Services

- ADLS (Azure Data Lake Storage)

- Azure Storage Services

- Azure Database for PostgresSQL

- Server operating systems (Windows and RHEL)

- ASR (Azure Site Recovery)

- Azure Backup /Recovery Vault

- Azure Identity and Access Management

- Azure Key Vault

Desirable:

  • Relevant industry certifications
  • Regulated industry experience, ideally in financial services
  • Experience working in a DevOps environment
  • Desirable technical experience in:

- Azure Virtual Machines

- Azure Kubernetes Service

- Azure Active Directory/Active Directory

- Azure Monitor (AMA, MMA/ OMS agents)

- Azure Logic Apps

- Azure Data Factory

- Azure Synapse
