As the qualification guidelines are so vast, it would be impossible to fully explain the grounds of eligibility so we have provided a few points to consider when claiming.

The company must be Limited or Plc. (Liable for corporation Tax).

The company does not have to be in profit, you can still claim if you are running at a loss.

You can claim for the past 2 financial years and each year moving forward.

Have you come up against any technical challenges in the past 2 years?
It’s common to assume the only work which can be called Research & Development are projects involving scientists in white coats in a laboratory - this is not the case.

The HMRC R&D Tax Relief Scheme is designed to allow companies from all sectors to benefit from the work they carry out where there was not an immediate straight-forward solution. Projects undertaken for the claim period whereby a solution was not immediately available and the company had to conduct some experimentation, analysis and trial various solutions until a satisfactory outcome was achieved.

Have you developed an entirely new product?
Have you improved a product to make it more efficient/environmentally friendly/added functionality/reduce waste?
Have you improved or adapted new or existing machinery, materials, devices, products or services in order to achieve an objective e.g. scale a product/process up or down?

Processes/Procedures
Have you modernised, altered or updated any processes/procedures to make them more efficient/increase production times?
Have you automated some processes/procedures to make them cheaper/better?

IT/Software
Have you had any systems or software developed or adapted for your business.
