Which Supermarket Pays Best

Which Supermarket Pays Best?

With higher living costs and hints of an economic recession, shop floor workers will undoubtedly be looking for the best pay deal. The good news is that supermarkets have given thousands of supermarket workers hourly pay rises this year.

The latest supermarket to announce a pay rise is Aldi. New starters at Aldi and those on the supermarket’s minimum wage rate will get 40p added to their hourly rates, taking them from £10.10 an hour to a £10.50 hourly rate. For Inner London workers within the M25, the hourly rate is £11.95.

Supermarket Pay vs National Living Wage vs National Minimum Wage?

National Living Wage And National Minimum Wage

Understanding the minimum amount many employers pay workers should be set against the National Real Living Wage (for workers 23 and over) and the UK Minimum Wage (for workers 22 and under).

The National Living Wage and National Minimum Wages, as of April 2022, are set as follows:

  • National Living Wage - £9.50

  • 21-22 Year Old NMW - £9.18

  • 18-20 Year Old NMW - £6.83

  • 16-17 Year Old NMW - £4.81

Another metric to gauge your wages against is the London Living Wage. The London Living Wage is £11.95, calculated by the Living Wage Foundation. Paying the LLW is voluntary, with no legally binding requirement for employers to participate in the initiative.

When considering your pay rise or pay rates, you should also factor in perks that many supermarkets offer, such as bonuses, free health checks, paid breaks, and food discounts.
