The role

We are looking for inspiring Dynamics Trials Manager who is motivated and able to lead Trials Teams to deliver activities for our Customers and the Business across Land Ranges.


Key Activities


  • That for all Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) activities that you are nominated to manage, you lead a team of Suitably Qualified Experienced Persons (SQEP) and Subject Matter Experts (SME) to produce a risk assessment that identifies: Hazards; Causes; Control Measures; and Mitigations. To ensure that those risks are mitigated to a level of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP); That the risk assessment is deemed suitable and sufficient.
  • That for all OME activities that you are nominated to manage, you are able to produce an appropriate Safety Briefing that clearly details the all hazards related to the activity, with specific focus on the hazards presented by the explosive items and/or articles handled.
  • That the appropriate level of supervision is applicable to the task; by yourself; by supervisors under your control; that the requirements laid out in any activity plan are being followed and that a Safe System of Work (SSoW) is in operation.
  • All OME activities related engineering activities are conducted in accordance with QinetiQ Engineering Policy including independent Assurance Reviews.
  • That all changes to OME Activities are managed through either the HAM Process, the Deviations and Waivers Process and/or the Weapons Division Change Control Process as appropriate.
  • All OME activities for which you are the nominated Trials Manager are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the issued Trials Hazardous Activities Certificate and/or Peer Review requirements whichever applies, and that the technical content of activity fully meets the customer's expectations.
  • That all Safety Distances are calculated using service publications where available. Where none is available, ensure the Weapon Danger Area is calculated using an approved method.
  • That all hazardous activities conducted, fall within the scope of your certified technical competence.
  • That all OME activities are carried out in accordance with QinetiQ Range Procedures.
  • Essential Capabilities/Knowledge


  • To be able to organise, execute and report on Trial and Proof activities, new and novel for: In Service Ordnance; Munitions for use by Sea, Land and Air forces;
  • Disposal of OME activities arising’s in a safe and appropriate manner in accordance with the designated EOD and/or RSP procedures.
  • Becoming recognised as the Technical Lead for activities that you have the competence and expertise to undertake in this role, undergoing any additional training required to meet the Technical Lead requirement.
  • Managing all QinetiQ Trial and Proof activities records, documents and third party information in accordance with QinetiQ Document and Record Management Policy.
  • To be able and willing to campaign to other Land Ranges as required, to deliver OME activities, which fall within your competency and expertise.
  • Mentoring Trainee, Graduate and Trainee Trials Managers while under site control.
  • Undertake further courses and other educational activities as required to ensure your continuous training development.
  • Ensure team members are competent and current for various weapons systems on all upcoming OME activities.
  • Undertake duties assigned by the Team Leader and Group Leader.

  • Your work base will be either Shoeburyness or Eskmeals Ranges depending on home location.
  • Ability to deploy to other Land Ranges for periods to deliver activities.

  • Desirable Experience and Qualifications


  • Experience and qualifications in the area of Medium and Large Calibre Gun Firings.
  • Experience in constructing Weapon Danger Areas.
  • Experience of implementing a Safe System of Work (SSoW): Safe People; Safe Places; Safe Equipment; Safe Practice.
  • Good Knowledge of Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives.
  • Good Knowledge of Test and Evaluation processes.
  • Experience in Risk Assessment process.
  • Proficient in the use of computer systems Microsoft Office software.
  • Clean UK driving licence.
