The World Shipping Council (WSC) is the united voice of liner shipping, working with policymakers and industry groups to shape the future growth of a socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, safe, and secure shipping industry. Our members are ocean carriers who transport about 90% of international containerized cargo and operate large vehicle carrier and ro-ro fleets.


As Communications Manager, you will play a key role in our work on safety, security, and sustainability through strategic communication initiatives, engaging with members and external audiences. We are as international as the industry we serve, with member companies all over the world and offices in Washington, London, Brussels, and Singapore.

Position Overview

The Communications Manager will report directly to the Communications Director and will work closely with colleagues worldwide. This new role will be pivotal in supporting external and membership communications and engagement efforts to advance our policy objectives, enhance the liner shipping industry reputation, and strengthen the WSC brand.

An important part of this role involves membership success management, including the Member Newsletter and other initiatives to support member engagement.

Key Responsibilities


  • Strategy Development and Implementation: Plan and execute comprehensive communication strategies that amplify WSC’s impact, focusing on informing and influencing key audiences such as policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public. This includes developing targeted messaging on key issues like safety, security, and sustainability, monitoring industry trends to adapt tactics proactively, and ensuring alignment with WSC’s policy objectives.
  • Content Creation and Management: Plan, write, and edit high-quality content swiftly for internal and external channels, including press releases, blog posts, newsletters, and social media. Ensure all communications are engaging, clear, and effectively convey complex ideas in an accessible manner.
  • Membership Engagement: Lead initiatives to enhance member engagement and management, including managing the Member Newsletter.
  • Project Management: Manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously, bringing energy, pace, and a positive, can-do attitude to all tasks.



Skills and Experience


  • Education: University degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a discipline equally relevant to the post.
  • Communication Expertise: Proven experience (3- 5 years) in communications, preferably in a complex or technical field or involving public affairs. Outstanding English written and verbal communication skills, with a track record of creating compelling messages and narratives.
  • Content Development: Ability to create a variety of content, including press releases, blog posts, social media, and newsletters, adapting style and tone to suit different audiences and platforms.
  • Strategic Mindset: Experience in planning and delivering communication strategies and campaigns that effectively engage, inform, and influence key stakeholders.
  • Audience-First Approach: A passion for creating innovative and engaging communications that resonate with and influence target audiences.
  • Relationship Management: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues, members, and external partners.
  • Adaptability and Proactivity: Self-motivated, flexible, and proactive, with a collaborative mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Willingness to take on new tasks when required, as part of a team based across three continents and multiple time zones.


An international or multicultural background, as well as any experience related to shipping, logistics, or international policy work, is a distinct advantage. Applicants must possess proof of eligibility to work in the UK (e.g., UK passport, settled status, etc.).


Travel

Ability to travel as required, both within Europe and internationally.
