Position: Claims Executive

Reporting to: Head of Legal (Maritime) and Insurance

Contract type: Permanent

Overview of role

Zodiac Maritime seeks to appoint an experienced and high calibre Claims Executive to join our knowledgeable and well-established Insurance and Legal team. This is a commercial role assisting the business with insurance claims and legal advice across the Zodiac fleets whilst protecting the Owner's interests.

Key responsibilities and primary deliverables

Legal

  • Day to day dealing with any large litigation cases that may affect the fleet such as; casualty claims, cargo claims, offhire and demurrage.
  • Partnering with Charterers, Operators and various other sectors to problem solve, assist with drafting, and commercially resolving issues as they arise.
  • Assisting with drafting clauses and reviewing charterparties where necessary.
  • When required to attend Court, Arbitration Tribunals and/or Mediation.

Insurance

  • To understand the various insurances and how they work together, assisting with renewals where required.
  • To deal with insurance claims promptly and by following a clear strategy. Reporting to the Management team where necessary.
  • Working with the relevant insurers, making sure they are notified promptly of claims where the liability is likely to exceed the deductible.
  • Ensure claims data is kept up to date and reserving is done to an accurate level.
  • To participate in claims review meetings to discuss specific claims types and identify trends in particular claims categories and/or fleets.

Team

  • Ability to work both independently, putting together strategies and advices, as well as collaboratively, as part of the team and across the business.
  • To be an effective problem solver, understand the various sectors of the business and be commercially minded individual in the approach to problems.
  • To be available out of hours where needed and to be prepared to take the emergency phone periodically where required.

Skills Profile

  • Previous experience as a senior claims handler (3-5 years' PQE) from either a Law Firm, P&I Club or Owner.
  • You hold a Law degree.
  • Practical working knowledge of maritime insurance and claims.
  • Strategic thinker: able to formulate independent strategy on cases and execute this to completion.
  • Ability to communicate complex legal problems in a clear and concise manner.
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritise work streams under pressure & problem solve where required.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, collaborative in style and excellent communication skills.
  • Highly effective at building and sustaining relationships with all internal and external stakeholders, even in challenging situations.
  • Team Player: to contribute to the success of the team by sharing knowledge and experience freely within the team. To assist other members of the team as required during busy periods or absences.
