Inhouse Building Surveyor - Education Sector



Thatcher Associates has been retained by a Multi-Academy Trust to assist with the recruitment of a Building Surveyor.



The Trust


Our client is a large multi academy trust with a significant number of schools located across the length and breadth of the UK encompassing primary and secondary education facilities.



The Role


They plan to appoint a Building Surveyor to oversee small scale capital projects across their portfolio of buildings and infrastructure.

This is a new position for the Trust.

Reporting to an Estates Director, responsibilities will include:


  • Assisting with the development of annual and longer term capital expenditure plans.
  • Collaborating with teaching and premises staff to determine the scope of a project and produce a project brief.
  • Selection, appointment and management of external architects, engineering consultants, cost consultants etc.
  • Selection and appointment of a main contractor.
  • Monitoring delivery on site, ensuring projects are completed to program, to the correct quality standard and with minimal snags / defects.
  • Managing a change register, analysing and agreeing contractor variations.
  • Administration of the main contract.
  • Providing technical advice and support to the estates team.

Typical projects might include re-roofing buildings, structural alterations to facilitate change of use, new classroom facilities or changes to infrastructure to provide better outside facilities.

Contract values will range from £50,000 to £600,000 and will generally be let under a JCT intermediate form of contract.



The Offer


This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in a dynamic and progressive multi-academy trust whilst making a meaningful difference to the UK’s education stock.

Salary on offer is likely to be IRO £50-55,000 with an incremental improvement annually + defined benefit pension scheme + generous holiday allowance + fully expensed travel when required.
